how long should a broken thumb stay swollen?
my 3 year old son fractured his thumb 3 days ago, the hospital put it in a splint and his doctor at his follow up said he would have to wear it for at least 2 weeks.. but i’ve noticed that his thumb is still black and blue and still just as swollen as when he first broke it.. how long should it be like this and when will it start to go down? also the fracture is on a growth plate so the hospital told us to watch it.. could this be part of the reason?

You need to keep the thumb above his heart for the swelling to go down. Hand above the elbow and elbow above the heart. Lol, good luck with that with a three year old. Unfortunately blood flows like water downhill. To prevent the hand from swelling up you need to hold his hand the other way. Also check to see if the bandage they wrapped around him is too tight. If it is then re-wrap it so that it isn’t tight. A too tight bandage will make the thumb swell up even more because it is constricting the venous circulation. Use a gauze bandage instead of an elastic bandage. It is less constricting. The ecchymosis will go away gradually but again you want it to go towards his elbow and not his thumb.
